How our battery cloud creates value to our customers

Published on

Over the last decade, Li-ion batteries have gone from being an enabler for mobile electronics to playing a more significant role in decarbonising the energy supply and reducing the greenhouse gases in the world. Today's vehicle fleets are being electrified using Li-ion batteries. These batteries have also become the main technology in energy storage solutions as an alternative to fossil fuel-based sources.

Li-ion batteries are complex components that are unique and degrade differently. Moreover, individual usage patterns will result in battery aging that is incomparable from user to user increasing the complexity of battery systems.

Even if this is a known fact, existing battery systems rely on outdated battery operating and controlling systems. Battery management systems (BMSs) are pre-configured at the factory for operating the battery for the entirety of its lifetime without taking into account degradation and usage patterns. This leads to a large number of batteries being discarded years ahead of time.

For storage systems utilising second-life batteries, this is even more important as the battery types will be diversifying exponentially. Although this is a challenge, second-life batteries can live on for more than 10 years if selected, configured and operated correctly. This is the reason why Evyon started building a solution that enables a data-driven approach to repurposing.

This solution is called the Battery Cloud, and its key functionalities are:

  • Live and historical battery system data

  • Over the air updates that bring safety and performance improvements based on learning from all of Evyon battery systems

  • Customizable notifications

  • APIs for integration with third-party applications

The Battery Cloud brings several benefits both to customers and Evyon.

To customers, the Battery Cloud brings the ability to follow their battery system data in real-time as well as peace of mind that their battery system is safely monitored and updated. The Battery Cloud also integrates with other customer services and platforms through APIs in order to seamlessly integrate into the customer’s systems.

To Evyon, the Battery Cloud is a key tool to further extend the understanding of how second-life batteries perform and how to maximize their value to customers. By collecting operational data from the battery systems, Evyon is not only able to bring more value to future customers, but also to existing ones through over-the-air updates.

Evyon is continuously working to improve the Battery Cloud and its features in order to increase its value to both customers and Evyon, and they are also working closely with customers to collect and incorporate their feedback.

By following this data-driven approach Evyon aims to become world-leading in maximizing the value of reused batteries.
