Evyon and Mercedes-Benz Energy sign 26MWh sourcing agreement and MoU to enable maximum value generation from second-life EV batteries

Mercedes-Benz Energy (MBE) and Evyon have signed a sourcing agreement for the supply of 26MWh of electric vehicle (EV) battery modules with delivery in 2022. In addition, the parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the continued supply of second-life EV batteries to be used in Evyon’s energy storage solutions. The agreement outlines the intentions of both parties to collaborate to maximize the value of these batteries in growing quantities in the future, and how the companies will work together to achieve individual and collective business goals.

Battery energy storage systems will play a key role in the transition of our energy systems from hydrocarbon-based to fully renewable. Bloomberg New Energy Finance has estimated the installed energy storage capacity to increase by a factor of 20 during this decade alone, and the recent uptake in European energy prices has created a surge in the demand for photovoltaic systems, which again is further accelerating the demand for battery energy storage.

Repurposing used batteries coming from electric vehicles is a novel approach to meet this growing demand, and even more so in current times of global shortages of newly produced batteries and other electrical components. Automotive batteries are also some of the highest quality batteries given the stringent quality assurance procedures of premium manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz.

Gordon Gassman, MBE’s CEO, explains: “MBE cares about the sustainability of its operations, and the safe and responsible use of our batteries is a core part of our strategy. We recognize Evyon’s mission as perfectly aligned with that strategy, and we have selected Evyon as a partner to grow together”.

Evyon has already been using MBE’s batteries in three different product categories brought to the market under the company’s former name RePack. Today, Evyon is developing the next-generation energy storage product based on MBE’s battery modules, with pre-sales aimed to start during the second half of 2022.

Jørgen Erdal, Evyon’s Co-founder and CEO comments: We are proud to be selected partner of MBE and to now take the first steps of what we believe will be a long-term partnership with a highly respected industry player. The partnership will secure Evyon access to large volumes of top-quality batteries to support reaching our ambition of becoming European leaders in 2025.”
