Evyon and Batteriretur sign a MoU agreement to maximize the value of industrial batteries

Published on

Evyon has joined forces with Batteriretur to maximize the value of spent industrial batteries together. The companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining the intention to work together to convert reusable industrial batteries collected or handled by Batteriretur into high-quality battery systems for second-life applications.

Battery energy storage systems will play a key role in the transition of our energy systems from hydrocarbon-based to fully renewable. Bloomberg New Energy Finance has estimated the installed energy storage capacity to increase by a factor of 20 during this decade alone, and the recent uptake in European energy prices has created a surge in the demand for photovoltaic systems, which again is further accelerating the demand for battery energy storage.

Repurposing used batteries coming from electric vehicles is a novel approach to meet this growing demand, and even more so in current times of global shortages of newly produced batteries and other electrical components. Automotive batteries are currently forming an increasing part of the waste streams handled by Batteriretur in Norway.

Fredrik Andresen, Batteriretur’s CEO, explains: “Working with Evyon gives us the confidence that qualified batteries are repurposed in a safe and professional manner. The circular nature of Evyon’s business model is a natural extension of our recycling operations, and we look forward to partnering with Evyon to grow together”.

Batteriretur and Evyon will collaborate to convert a growing volume of discarded industrial batteries handled by Batteriretur into top-quality energy storage systems for second-life applications. These products’ applications may range from commercial and private buildings to enabling charging infrastructure on construction sites.

Jørgen Erdal, Evyon’s Co-founder and CEO comments: “We are proud to be working with one of the most experienced industrial battery handling companies in the world to maximize the value of even more batteries. Working with Batteriretur ensures not only access to industrial batteries, but also to Batteriretur’s expertise and experience which we can leverage towards increased safety and quality of our products. Tight integration with the existing value chain also reduces the environmental impact of operations.”

Together, Batteriretur and Evyon have the opportunity to convert the Norwegian subsidization of electric cars into a new export adventure. A collaboration has the potential to create several positive ripple effects far beyond the companies’ activities:

  • Contribution to the establishment of an ecosystem based on a circular economy that maximizes the value of available resources.

  • Creation of new Norwegian and international jobs in the green shift.

  • Conversion of waste into high-quality products that benefit both customers and society.

  • Delivery of sustainable products to an increasing demand for battery storage.
